The Assay Office was established in 1993 under the Jewellery Act 1990. This Act was repealed and replaced by the Jewellery Act 2007.

The Assay Office has a regulatory function in ensuring compliance with the Jewellery Act 2007. The Act provides for the regulation and control of the manufacture, sale and importation of jewellery made of gold, silver and platinum and for the verification and grading of precious and semi-precious stones.

The Assay Office is registered to MS ISO 9001:2015.

The Assay Office operates two laboratories namely:

• Assay Laboratory, for the assaying of gold, silver and platinum jewellery and their alloys. It is the first public laboratory to be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 with MAURITAS.
• Gemmology Laboratory, for verification and grading of precious and semi-precious stones.

The Assay Office is committed to providing the best possible services to its customers. To this end, two quality management systems have been implemented with a view to standardise its processes with clear quality objectives for a better service delivery and enhancing customer satisfaction.

Through its participation in the Public Service Excellence award, the Assay Office has won the Customer Focus Award in 2012. It has also obtained a Special Mention Award in 2013 for innovation and improvement.
